Our History

The Funkhouse was born in 1996 after 3 friends returned from a couple of years travelling around the world. Prior to this the   Funkhouse was known as the Gould’s Plaza Hotel, or just the ‘Plaza’ and has been part of Sydney’s landscape for many years.

Its most famous guest would probably be an iconic Aussie Rock Band known as Cold Chisel. Cold Chisel stayed at the Plaza on many occasions, even writing a song about their experiences as it obviously left an impression on them.

Since the days of the Plaza, the Funkhouse has taken its place and provided a cool, safe home away from home.

Our aim is to give the best possible experience of Sydney, our beautiful city, whilst keeping the real spirit of travelling.

As all guests at the Funkhouse know, our mantra is:  ”You Trip Your Way!”
