What we do to help you
At the Funkhouse Backpackers Hostel, we provide the following services to cater for our working holiday guests:
Get organised
If you want to get organised for work you need to follow the steps below:

If you are planning to work in Australia, then you will need a Tax File Number (TFN). This is legally required for employers to pay tax on your behalf.
Depending on how busy the Tax Office is, your application should take no longer than 3 weeks to process and be delivered (via postal service). If you get the timing right, your TFN should be waiting for you in our post when you arrive, then you can get on with working straight away!
You will require a postal address when you apply. If you have booked to stay at the Funkhouse, then you are more than welcome to use our address. Make sure the details look the same as below. Make careful note of the suburb 'Potts Point' (not 'Kings Cross')
You can apply online for your TFN, but you can also apply for your TFN in person at the Australian Tax Office Shopfront. You'll then need to take your passport, and have the address to send the number to.
The nearest shopfront to the Funkhouse Backpackers is located at:
2 Lang Street
Sydney NSW 2000
It's about 15 minutes walk from the Funkhouse (see map below). The nearest City Rail stations are 'Martin Place', 'Circular Quay' or 'Wynyard'.
After you have finished working in Australia and at the end of each financial year (after June 30th every year) you really should claim your TAX BACK – the money is yours after all and you worked hard for it! Click below to claim your tax back - it doesn't matter if you are in Australia or if you have gone home - you can still claim.
If you are coming to Australia on a working holiday visa, you may want to open a bank account - particularly if you intend to work, so you can be paid. It's really easy to do.
There are number of banks that offer good banking services. The main banks are: Commonwealth, ANZ, Westpac and National. If you are here for one year then it will help if you open an account within 6 weeks of arriving.
Most of the big banks have stores in Kings Cross and all you need to do is walk into one of them with your passport and visa and they can set you up there and then.
You will be required to give an address of residence in Australia for delivery of your bank card, account details, PIN number etc. We are happy for you to use the Funkhouse Address for this purpose:

Australian Mobile Phone Number
If you are coming to Australia, you probably would like to have a Australian mobile phone number. Not only to call your new Funky friends, or your familiy, but also to hear from potential employers about job offers as soon as possible!
If you are bringing your own simlock free phone, it's very easy to buy a simcard, so that you can start calling immediately! There are a lot shops in the city that sell simcards and can connect you right away.
Please contact reception if you have any questions!
One of the easiest ways to get work in Sydney is to join job agencies. We recommend you to take some time to send all your details, including your availability and C.V. to as many agencies as you can, therefore maximising your chances of finding the perfect job.
The agencies were are partnered with regularly offer temporary positions to Funkhouse guests, some of these lead to permanent positions and sponsorship, which is something you may or may not be interested in.

Training Courses – RSA, RCG and GREEN CARDS
If you are seeking work in hospitality or construction (both industries always have plenty of available positions), you need to complete a government approved training course. Once you complete the course and have the qualification, you maximise your opportunity for getting a job.
Please see our reception staff for more information about booking a training course!
Hospitality
If you are looking for work in the Hospitality industry - in particular bar work, or working in licensed restaurants - you will require a qualification called "Responsible Service of Alcohol" (RSA). This is a compulsory course for the service of alcohol in bars and restaurants.
The Funkhouse Backpackers Hostel has a relationship with the cheapest and most efficient companies for completing your RSA. The course operates daily, it takes 6 hours and costs $75. We book the RSA for guests regularly and availability is generally very good.
The " Responsible Conduct of Gambling" (RCG) is required for staff working in establishments where there are gaming machine activities. Many pubs and clubs in Australia have gaming machines, so it is extremely beneficial to have this qualification when applying for jobs. This course takes place only a few times a week, takes 6 hours and costs $70.
Construction
Working on a building site requires a general occupational health and safety certificate. This is sometimes referred to as a "Green Card" or "White Card". This is required for contractors, labourers, trades people, plumbers, electricians, carpenters, supervisors, project managers, etc. This qualification takes 8 hours, requires ID and operates most days.
More Information
If you wish to book any of these courses for a specific date before you arrive to stay with us at the Funkhouse Backpackers Hostel, please fill in the form below with as many details as possible to book your spot.
